New Horizons

Hello to everyone who still stumbles over my old blog!

It's been a year since my last post but it's not like I've done nothing in the meantime. I completed a Professional Writing MA and started writing my fantasy novel. Doing the MA made me realise some things the beginnings of which you can see in my posts from when I started studying. Life is different now and I have narrowed down my focus, which means I have moved on to a different platform. Sorry to be so cryptic but if I explained everything, I'd have to write a novel about that. ;-P So, here's what you need to know:

Check out my new Tumblr blog where I talk about folklore, fantasy and writing! (Also includes the occasional fangirl attack. ;-P)

Self-assertion as a writer

A journey through a young writer's heart

This past weekend I got to meet published authors at the North Cornwall Book Festival. *squee* Some of my fellow students on the Professional Writing MA and last year's alumni and me went up to a place called St. Endellion to blog about the festival. If you want to find out more about the festival, you can read all about it here.

In this post I will talk about how the festival took me a step further on the way to calling myself a writer. The last time I took you on a journey through a young writer's heart I mentioned that I wasn't quite there yet. I wasn't quite ready to call myself a writer but last weekend changed that. It was a truly inspiring weekend hearing experienced writers talk about their craft and I enjoyed every last bit of it!

The UK = fangirl heaven

Above Pelennor Fields aka Bodmin Moor

WARNING: This post may contain strong traces of obsession. Do not read if you suffer from annoyance or hatred towards fangirls!

So, I moved to fangirl heaven. *.*

The Hero's Journey - my very own writing adventure

A journey through a young writer's heart

And here I am, once again, embarking on yet another adventure. I begin to see a pattern here. It seems to be my kind of thing to go on adventures. ;-P Fortunately it never gets old and every time it's a new and unique experience. Just like the heroes in our beloved stories I am curious to see what's out there and make my own way in the world. I love to travel, see new things and take them in, which hopefully also feeds into my writing.

"Tell me it's not Twilight..." - the end of an era

Finally, you might say, I am cured, cured from vampirism. You want to know how I lost my fangirl obsession with this particular genre that is still on the loose with ever more and more clichéd storylines? Then read on and enjoy the ride.

Inspiration

A journey through a young writer's heart

Stories move us. Stories change us. They take us into different worlds, show us right from wrong and stay with us from our childhood until the end. As a bookworm, I like to get completely immersed in a tale and join the emotional rollercoaster that characters have to go through. As a writer, I want to get those words to ring, I want to create new worlds out of nothing and I also want to entertain.

But before you can start spinning the yarn of your very own work, you need an idea, something that will shape your story and your characters. It often starts off with a tiny spark called inspiration that may come to you anywhere at any time and may evolve into something bigger. Like J.K. Rowling, who experienced this spark of inspiration for the story about the boy who lived on a train ride from Manchester to London and has created the magical world we all love.
